What is a retaining wall and what are its purposes?
Retaining walls are a common construction structure that is used to resist the lateral pressure of the soil, rocks or water (or other material) that they are holding back. It is typically used in situations where material needs to be prevented from sliding down a slope, material needs to be prevented from entering a workspace (excavations, trenches, cofferdams, basements etc) or where the grounds load-bearing capacity is not sufficient to support the weight of the material surrounding it.
Retaining walls can be constructed using a variety of materials, including wood, stone, concrete, and metal. The most common type of retaining wall is the gravity wall, which relies on its own weight for stability. Other types of retaining walls include cantilever walls, sheet pile walls, king post walls, gabion walls and reinforced concrete walls. Each type of wall has its own advantages and disadvantages, and the best choice for a particular project will depend on a number of factors, including the nature of the ground, the size of the area to be support, and the budget. In some cases, more than one type of wall may be used in conjunction with each other to create a more stable structure.
Case studies of Daace projects
We have many case studies of successful sheet piling projects that have been completed all over the UK. Some of the factors that contributed to the success of these projects include proper planning, use of the right equipment, and an experienced team.
